FOREIGN FILMS — LOOK PAST THE SUBTITLES
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Don’t be afraid of subtitles.
For February, we’re asking you to take a small step outside your usual moviegoing comfort zone—and we think you’ll be glad you did. These aren’t movies you watch simply because they happen to be in another language. They are great movies, period.
Our four selections—Das Boot, Babette’s Feast, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie—could hardly be more different. One is a gripping battle-at-sea thriller, another a warm and beautifully observed celebration of food and human connection, another a feverish journey into obsession and madness, and the last a wickedly funny surreal satire of polite society.
And if you think subtitles create distance between you and a movie, wait until you experience Das Boot and Aguirre, the Wrath of God. These films pull you in rather than hold you at arm’s length. Das Boot is tense, claustrophobic and relentlessly suspenseful—you may forget you’re reading subtitles altogether. Aguirre is hypnotic, strange and increasingly unsettling, taking you deep into the jungle and into the mind of a man consumed by ambition.
The subtitles are simply the doorway. The movies are what you’re here for.
So this February, look past the words at the bottom of the screen. Give these films a chance to surprise you, entertain you, challenge you—and perhaps remind you that some of the most unforgettable movie experiences can come from places far beyond Hollywood.

DAS BOOT
Tues. February 2nd
Germany (1981)
Forget the subtitles—this is first and foremost a gripping, claustrophobic thriller. Das Boot puts you inside a German U-boat crew during World War II, where every creak, depth charge and dwindling breath of oxygen becomes terrifyingly real. Tense, immersive and brilliantly acted, this is the kind of film that grabs you early and refuses to let go. A great choice for anyone who thinks “foreign film” means slow and difficult.

BABETTE'S FEAST
Tues. February 9TH
Denmark (1987)
A quiet, beautiful surprise about faith, sacrifice, community—and one extraordinary meal. When a mysterious French housekeeper wins the lottery, she decides to spend her entire fortune preparing an unforgettable feast for the austere villagers who have taken her in. Warm, funny and deeply human, Babette’s Feast is a movie that sneaks up on you and leaves you feeling remarkably good about people. Come for the feast; stay for the story.

AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD

West Germany (1972)
Werner Herzog takes us deep into the Amazon with a band of Spanish conquistadors searching for the legendary El Dorado—and into the mind of one increasingly unhinged man. Klaus Kinski gives a mesmerizing performance as Aguirre, a man consumed by ambition, madness and the jungle around him. Strange, hypnotic and unforgettable, this is adventure filmmaking stripped of Hollywood polish. Think Apocalypse Now meets a fever dream—centuries earlier.

THE DISCREET CHARM
OF THE BOURGEOISIE

France (1972)
What happens when a group of well-to-do friends simply cannot manage to sit down for dinner? In Luis Buñuel’s wickedly funny surrealist comedy, an ordinary evening becomes an escalating parade of bizarre interruptions, dreams and social absurdities. Elegant on the surface and completely outrageous underneath, it gleefully takes aim at polite society, privilege and hypocrisy. Come expecting dinner. Leave wondering what the hell you just watched—in the best possible way.
